Do You Need a Visa for Scotland?

January 24, 2026 5 min read

No traditional visa needed for Scotland, but Americans must have a UK ETA. Scotland is part of the UK, so the same entry requirements apply. Here's what you need to know.

Planning to explore Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, or the Isle of Skye? You don't need a traditional visa to visit Scotland, but you do need a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Here's what Americans need to know.

Scotland Is Part of the United Kingdom

While Scotland has its own distinct culture, legal system, and even parliament, it is part of the United Kingdom. This means the same entry requirements that apply to England, Wales, and Northern Ireland also apply to Scotland.

According to the US State Department, all American citizens traveling to any part of the UK must have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before travel.

Entry Requirements for Scotland

As of January 8, 2025, here's what you need to visit Scotland:

  • UK ETA (mandatory for all US visitors)
  • Valid US passport for the duration of your stay
  • At least one blank page for entry stamps

About the UK ETA

The ETA is not a visa. It's a digital pre-travel authorization similar to the US ESTA system. According to VisitScotland:

  • Cost: Β£16 (approximately $20)
  • Validity: 2 years or until your passport expires
  • Processing: Usually within 3 working days
  • Required for: All travelers including children and babies

You can apply through the UK ETA app (available on iOS and Android) or on the UK Government website. Apply at least 3 days before your trip.

How Long Can You Stay?

With an ETA, Americans can stay in Scotland (and the rest of the UK) for up to 6 months for tourism, business, or visiting family. You cannot extend this stay or work without obtaining a proper visa.

Scotland vs. Schengen: Key Differences

Like the rest of the UK, Scotland is NOT part of the Schengen Area. This has important implications for your travel planning:

  • Time in Scotland doesn't count toward your Schengen 90-day limit
  • ETIAS (the new European pre-authorization) will NOT apply to Scotland when it launches in late 2026
  • You can combine UK and European travel strategically for longer trips

For example, you could spend 90 days in the Schengen Area, then fly to Scotland for several months, keeping your travel windows separate.

Planning Your Scotland Trip

Scotland is one of the most popular destinations for American travelers to the UK, with Edinburgh, the Highlands, and whisky distilleries drawing visitors year-round. The entry process is straightforward:

  1. Apply for your UK ETA at least 3 days before travel
  2. Bring your valid US passport
  3. You can stay up to 6 months

Remember that your time in Scotland doesn't affect your Schengen allowance. For help tracking your European travel, try our free Schengen calculator or the Days Monitor app.
