Do US Citizens Need a Visa for Malta?

No. US citizens do not need a visa to visit Malta for tourism or business. Malta is a full Schengen Area member, allowing US passport holders visa-free entry for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

From Q4 2026, ETIAS pre-travel authorization will be required (EUR7, valid 3 years).

How Long Can Americans Stay in Malta?

Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. Malta joined Schengen on March 21, 2007. It is the smallest Schengen member by both area (316 km2) and population (approximately 550,000).

Entry Requirements for Malta

  • Valid US passport: Valid for at least 3 months beyond planned Schengen departure
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Return or onward ticket
  • ETIAS authorization (from Q4 2026)

Malta-Specific Gotchas

English is an official language: Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English. English has been in official use since British colonial rule (independence 1964). Road signs, menus, and official forms are in English. This makes Malta one of the easiest Schengen countries for Americans to navigate.

You cannot drive to Malta: Malta is an island. You must arrive by air (Malta International Airport, MLA) or sea (ferry from Sicily). There are no land borders.

Left-hand traffic: Malta drives on the left β€” a remnant of British rule. Rental cars are right-hand drive. Roundabouts and overtaking work opposite to continental Europe.

Three inhabited islands: Malta (main island), Gozo (25-minute ferry), and Comino (Blue Lagoon day trips only). The ferry to Gozo is free for pedestrians.

Nomad Residence Permit available: Malta's Nomad Residence Permit allows non-EU remote workers to stay beyond 90 days (minimum EUR2,700/month income required). Apply through Identity Malta.
