When a professional athlete plays an away game, the state hosting that game generally wants income tax on the portion of the season's pay attributable to it. The mechanism is the duty-day formula, and it applies to far more people than the players: coaches, managers, trainers and staff required to travel with the team are commonly caught by the same rules.

The formula
Income is apportioned by duty days in the state divided by total duty days. Both New York and Indiana set this out in their own materials, and the approach is substantively shared across jock-tax states.
Indiana's own worked example in Indiana DOR, Income Tax Information Bulletin #88 shows how small the fractions get: 2 Indiana duty days out of 150 total duty days produces an apportionment of 1.33 per cent. The percentage is small, the compliance obligation is not.
What counts as a duty day
Per Indiana DOR, Income Tax Information Bulletin #88, "'Total duty days' means all days during the taxable year that a team member renders a service for the team". In practice the window runs from the start of official pre-season training through the last game the team competes in or is scheduled to compete in, and it also picks up out-of-window service days such as instructional leagues, all-star games and promotional appearances.
The detail that changes the answer: travel days
Travel days with no game, practice or team meeting count in the denominator but not the numerator. This is the single most consequential mechanic in the calculation, and it works in the taxpayer's favour: every pure travel day increases your total duty days without adding to any state's share.
Two related points from the same source. Days on the disabled list generally count toward total duty days. Days on which no service is rendered and no compensation is paid, an unpaid suspension for example, are excluded from both sides of the fraction.
Why the record matters more than the rate
The formula is arithmetic. The difficulty is evidential. An athlete or travelling staff member may owe returns in a dozen states, each wanting a defensible count, and the count depends on a day-level record of where you were and what you were doing. Reconstructing that from a schedule after the fact is exactly the position you do not want to be in, particularly because 20 NYCRR 132.22, New York State defines duty days by reference to service rendered rather than simply to games played.
Beyond the players
If you travel with a team in a paid role, check your own position rather than assuming the rules stop at the roster. And if your residency picture is broader than sport, our guide to the 183-day rule by US state covers the separate question of when a state treats you as resident on all your income rather than a slice of it.
Counting these days automatically
A duty-day record has to be built as the season happens, because the fraction depends on where you were on individual days across an entire year. The Days Monitor iPhone app logs your days by country and state automatically, runs custom rules with rolling windows of any length, warns you before you cross a line, and exports a timestamped PDF or CSV record if you are ever asked to evidence it. Download it on the App Store.
